Today’s experience was truly an eye-opening one. I realised how fortunate I am when I saw the kids in the Bishop Aelen Home. They have very little facilities yet they are so happy with whatever they have. When I rendered my help to the kids in the home by pasting papers on the shelves I realised that the small deed we did, made the kids smile from ear to ear. These kids’ smiles brought smiles on our faces and made me feel that what I did was appreciated by the kids. Now, I am eagerly looking forward to further communicate with the kids in the home and foster a stronger bond with them.

Today’s experience was a meaningful one. When I arrived at Bishop Aelen Home, I realised that the place was extremely dirty and it was very hard to clean up. The dirt accumulated over the years and my friend and I had to clean up the place. My classmates and I were wrapping the cupboards with wrapping paper, causing it to look better and brighter. Another group was preparing pencil cases as presents for them. After the students came back to the home, they were extremely delighted because they had never received presents in a long time.

Today’s experience was very fun and life changing. I realised how fortunate I am to have many amenities for myself. The kids at Bishop Aelen home are not as privileged as us but they are very contented with what they have. I rendered my help to add chocolates to their pencil cases. I was really contented when I saw the appreciation on the faces of the children when they received the presents. Their expressions had so much of meaning. This really brought smiles to me. Now I am very eager to visit them again and help them in future. They also do not have electricity and safe water but they still manage to live happily. This is really very fascinating to me. I know I must be thankful for that I have in Singapore.

From the hearts of our students:
Today
was our second day at Bishop Aelen Home. I was astounded by the condition of
the home, probably because I am not used to messy conditions in Singapore. I
was able to communicate with some of the children although I don’t know Tamil
language. I thought that it would be hard for me to understand them but through
their expressions, I could see how happy they were to meet us. Overall, I can
say that we all have to appreciate what we have. I have everything I want, be
it clothes, food, shelter or family love. If I have the chance, when I grow up
and complete my studies, I would really want to help the under privileged people
in terms of education or health care. I want to go beyond donating. To me,
money can be given to anyone and you can be forgotten anytime but with help
given, they will remember you forever.
- Nur Qamarina, 3N1
The
school brought us to Bishop Aelen Home where we rendered our service to the
under privileged children. The place was very dusty and dirty. It was very
small and not well-furbished due to their low income. The conditions were quite
bad compared to Singapore. The kids did not know who we were but when we first
met them. They approached us like they had known us earlier. The kids were
really excited and were eager to communicate and learn from us. The kids valued
the learning aids we prepared and brought for them from Singapore. From this
experience I learned that I should value for what I have and what I get in the
future. I will step forward to learn something new through every chance I get.
Even though we have proper education and facilities, many of us are still not
happy with them and not valuing them. I have made it as a long term goal that I
have to learn at every chance I have. Through the interaction with the children
today, I realised that when we show care and concern for someone, they tend to
respect us even more than before.
