From the hearts of our students:

The visit to Mahalbalipuram was an eye-opening experience for me as it has many beautiful structures. Each beautiful artefact is amazingly carved out from one single stone many centuries ago. The myth of the Krishna Butterball was what arrested my attention. The myth has it that Krishna was an avid lover of ghee whom often go around stealing butterballs to eat. Once his mother punished him for stealing butterballs, he showed his love for butterballs by swallowing a mouthful of sand. When his mother asked him to opened his mouth, she was shocked to see a universe in his mouth- an indication that Krishna has supernatural powers. Myth aside, it is amazing that this huge boulder defies scientific principles by not sliding down the slope for centuries.

The learning at DakshinaChitra was enriching. I particularly liked the very realistic setting and how the houses looked different and unique. We could explore 17 heritage houses, and experience some of their activities like pottery, glass blowing and handkerchief painting. It was really an eye-opener for me as the craftsmen put in lots of patience and perseverance. I can infer that they are really passionate on what they do. I have learnt that with patience, we can achieve big things in life and this requires effort and time. We interacted with typical village artisans and witnessed folk performances set in an authentic ambience. We enjoyed a good Karagatam dance performance with the dancers carrying pots on their heads. They balanced the pots on their heads very well and their dance was awesome. For the pottery, it was a very nice experience for me as I learnt to be relaxed in order to shape the clay properly.

From the hearts of our students:

We went to a village today to find out about the lifestyle there. Not only did we learn about their lifestyle but also realised how grateful we should be to live in a developed country like Singapore. We also learned that the villagers solve their problems among themselves instead of going to the police. The village head would help to talk it out amongst the people. We also went to the village school to learn how they conduct lessons. The children have very little facilities. Yet, they participated in all the activities with enthusiasm. We also had a friendly soccer match with the boys. They lost to us yet congratulated us. I was amazed by their sportsmanship. Overall, it was a memorable experience as I saw the rural side of India today.

Today I visited an environment which is totally different from what I've been in for the past one week. We went to a village that was full of greenery and huts. The villagers also get their resources such as food and shelters by using the things that they already have. They get food from the paddy fields. The bullock cart was a different experience for all of us. It was different from the transportation we take in Singapore everyday. The air was also very fresh and the environment was peaceful without any busy roads. We also went to a village school nearby. The school did not have much facilities. They did not even have tables and chairs in their classrooms. 90% of the students there are poor and cannot even afford a set of uniform or footwear. Even though they have very little facilities given to them, they still continue to come to school everyday without being late. They also do not complain about how hot it is or how far they have to walk to school everyday. Overall, today is all about learning how to appreciate what I have and not take things for granted.
